Breed Check
Breed identification in pure and mixed breed dogs
Determining the purebred status of a dog is crucial for responsible breeding practices. It ensures that the offspring will inherit desirable traits and characteristics consistent with the breed's standard. The provided list of breeds offers a comprehensive overview of dogs that can be verified as purebred. This verification becomes especially valuable when seeking a breeding license, and in situations where essential pedigree documentation is missing, e.g. for one of the grandparents. In such cases, DNA testing proves instrumental in confirming the purebred status of the dogs.
Discovering the breed composition in mixed breed dogs provides valuable insights into their unique genetic heritage, helping owners better understand their pets' individual characteristics and behaviors. Understanding their genetic background can also aid in tailoring their care and training, considering the specific needs and tendencies of each breed. Additionally, knowing the breed composition can assist veterinarians in making more informed medical decisions and anticipating potential health issues based on breed predispositions.
Important for owners and breeders of purebred dogs:
You might use this test to verify that the dog sold to you is indeed purebred. As a breeder you might use this DNA test to provide additional confirmation to the buyer that everything is really correct with breed identity.
These tests can only be done for the breeds which appear in the list below.
If this is not the case, testing would not be recommended, as we cannot provide any meaningful results on purebred status.
Important for owners of mixed breed dogs or supposedly purebred dogs:
Is your dog a mixed breed or do you doubt that your dog is purebred then testing would still be possible and useful, even if a supposed breed is not on the list. It is very difficult to tell which breeds are represented in a mixed breed dog based solely on appearance. Studies confirm that the hit rate for assigning a dog to a breed based on its appearance is less than 25%. Based on the breed determination, admixture proportions for many dogs have turned out to be a surprise for their owners.
Of course, we are constantly trying to expand the list. However, this takes a time because we need a representative number of purebreds in the database in order to be able to make a valid statement.
SPECIAL OFFER
Now with every Breed Check we provide a test for the MDR1 (multidrug resistance 1) gene for free!
If your dog carries the MDR1 genetic defect, it can cause life-threatening intolerance to certain substances, which can be triggered by anesthetics, topical treatments, dewormers, and others. This defect can affect all dog breeds, including mixed breeds.
